SC5 develops, approves, and maintains standards pertaining and rela​ted to the product design and manufacture of:

  • casing/tubing and accessories for well operations
  • line pipe for transmission and facility piping
  • drill pipe and drill stem elements for drilling operations
  • pipe threading and gauging and thread compounds
  • coiled tubing and line pipe for service and ​intervention operations

The standards under SC5 are also supported with additional resources having expertise in metallurgy, performance properties, sour service, and coiled pipe

ProposalRevise the wording of to address a concern that the WT limits in Table 22 do not reflect the WT tolerances and machining capabilities. Currently, for pipe sizes near the bottom WT limits it is not possible to consistently meet the CVN machining limits of ASTM A370 and the specimen tolerances. As such, this material cannot be certified to 5L. The problem: Table 22 addresses the specified (ordered, nominal) wall thickness but it can be difficult or impossible to machine samples from pipe with wall thickness near the allowable minimum (-12.5%), especially using automated equipment. Example: 16” x 0.435” requires a full-size specimen to be machined according to Table 22. The minimum allowable wall thickness is 0.381”. The required dimensions of a full-size sample according to ASTM A370 are 2.165” x 0.394” x 0.394”. In this case, the allowable wall thickness does not permit a full-size sample to be obtained – not even considering min 0.039” min grind tolerance.
