Subcommittee Scope

Welcome to the home page for the CRE Subcommittee on Electrical Equipment (SOEE). The mission of the SOEE is to develop standards and recommended practices specific to the refining industry including:

  • RP 500 Classification of Areas for Electrical Installation in Petroleum Reinferies 
  • RP 505 Classification of Locations for Electrical Installations at Petroleum Facilities Classified as Class 1, Zone 0, Zone1, and Zone 2
  • Std 540 Electrical Installations in Petroleum Processing Plants ​
  • Std. 541 Form-Wound Squirrel-Cage Induction Motors 500 Horsepower and Larger
  • Std 546 Brushless Synchronous Machines-500 kVA and Larger
  • Std 547 General-purpose Form-wound Squirrel Cage Induction Motors-250 Horsepower and Larger

The SOEE also works closely with other standards developing organizations (SDOs)​​, such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and provides​​ technical comments to NFPA 70 National Electrical Code (NEC). The subcommittee analyzes technical issues, provides training and advice on relevant technical issues, and shares information, which is useful to the industry as a group.

This site provides information on upcoming meetings, minutes and presentations from recent meeting, and information on the status and balloting of standards maintained by the SOEE. This page displays public information while the SOEE Documents page​ stores committee member-only materials. ​

The 2022 Spring API Refining and Equipment Standards Meeting will be held on May 16-20 in Chicago at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. For more information please visit the API events calendar and reach out to the API representative.
