 About The Lubricants Committee

The Lubricants Group is responsible within the American Petroleum Institute for matters pertaining to the performance, applications, and dissemination of information on lubricants. The committee’s functions include the following: 

a.    Provide guidance on the API Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System (EOLCS) and guidelines for engine oil licensing and certification and EOLCS administration and enforcement.

b.    Develop, approve, and maintain standards and recommended practices on lubricants matters.

c.    Maintain liaison with ASTM International, Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), American Chemistry Council (ACC), Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA), Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers (Alliance), National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) and other technical or professional groups involved in lubricant activities.

d.    Sponsor and manage cooperative lubricants research projects as required by government regulations, trends in lubricants technology, and marketing practices, and licensing and certification requirements.         

e.    Educate the Marketing Subcommittee on the effects of federal, state, and local government regulations and legislation on lubricant manufacturing, application and performance.

f.     Develop recommendations for consumers on matters related to quality, performance and application of lubricants.  Disseminate appropriate educational materials and publications.
